Carbon black, the reinforcement of rubber
Carbon black can be used as reinforcing agent and filler for rubber. Carbon black and rubber generate heterogeneous microstructure, which is a reinforcing mechanism of composite materials. On the surface of carbon black, there is an adsorption layer composed of two kinds of moving rubber macromolecules. The inner layer, about 0.5 nm close to the surface of carbon black, is glassy; and the rubber, which is about 0.5-5.0 nm away from the surface of carbon black, is slightly mobile and subglassy. This layer is the outer layer. These two layers form the double shell on the surface of carbon black.
When the carbon black and rubber molecules are mixed above the wetting temperature, the rubber molecular chain can produce a strong molecular thermal movement, and enter the carbon black particle attraction scope, and be adsorbed on the surface of carbon black particles orientation. If the temperature is lower than the flow temperature, the molecular chain motion ability is weak, and can not enter the absorption range of carbon black, which will lead to unsatisfactory reinforcement effect. In this case, we can reduce the particle size of carbon black and other fillers and use surfactants.
How can the reinforcing effect of carbon black come into being? In fact, the addition of carbon black changed the structure of rubber, resulting in a C-phase structure (C-phase structure refers to the dense, directionally arranged, interlaced non-motional bonded rubber layer which is formed under the action of rubber molecules being around the carbon black particles). The C phase structure has great reinforcing effect on the strength and durability of rubber.
The surface activity of carbon black particles is not uniform, there are a few strong active points and a series of adsorption points with different energy. The rubber chains adsorbed on the surface of carbon black can have various binding energies.
